With Project Coco, you are investing in the Great Reforestation: an initiative that is reviving the rainforest on Simeulue in Indonesia and providing farmers with a fair income.
On the Indonesian island of Simeulue, outdated, low-yield coconut plantations are being transformed into healthy agroforestry systems that actually protect the rainforest. With your investment, old trees are being replaced by young, productive palms, enabling farmers to increase their income without having to cut down the forest. The yield is Virgin Coconut Oil of exceptional quality, pressed within two hours of harvesting and sought after by premium brands such as LUSH. Ecosia, “the search engine that plants trees,” is a co-investor in Project Coco and is contributing a total of €920,000, enabling us to make even more of an impact together. Help build an economy that strengthens biodiversity, rewards farmers fairly and gives the primeval forest a future, while earning an attractive return. Read more in the information brochure.

Frequently asked questions
Who buys the coconut oil?
Coconut oil is used in premium food and cosmetics. Major brands such as LUSH already use it as a key ingredient, and discussions are underway with other sustainable producers. Local processing ensures that more value remains in Indonesia, with the farmers and their communities.
What makes the coconut oil sustainable?
The oil comes from existing coconut forests that are balanced with new plantings, without additional deforestation. The trees grow in mixed crops with crops such as cocoa and cloves. This creates a regenerative ecosystem that absorbs CO₂, stimulates soil life and provides farmers with a stable income.
Who is your local partner?
Our partner is āluān, an Indonesian social enterprise that works with local farmers to produce fair coconut oil. They provide training, fair prices and process the oil locally with minimal ecological footprint.
