A GREEN INVESTMENT
With your investment, we plant Elephant Grass in the Kisaju region. This grass grows incredibly fast and stores CO2 in its roots. One square meter of grass absorbs 1.1 kg of CO2 per year and is harvested quarterly. The harvested grass is dried and then pressed into large briquettes. These briquettes are sold to industrial manufacturers. For example, producers of instant noodles and a factory where milk is pasteurized. These manufacturers use the briquettes as a sustainable and cheaper alternative to the wood- or fossil-fired machines commonly used in Kenya. We let the proceeds from sales flow back to our investors.
Briquettes are a sustainable alternative to firewood. Because of their higher energy density, briquettes burn much more efficiently. Moreover, they are also cheaper than other industrial fuels.
Elephant grass stores 20% of its CO2 in its roots. Moreover, the grass can be harvested up to 6 times a year without releasing this absorbed CO2 back into the atmosphere.
It takes very little energy to process the grass into briquettes. As a result, the entire carbon cycle is negative.

THE IMPACT OF PROJECT ELEPHANT GRASS
PREVENTING DEFORESTATION AND REDUCING EMISSIONS
Africa is a continent that is developing at lightning speed and Kenya has one of the fastest growing economies. While this is good news for Kenyans, it is simultaneously causing increasing deforestation and higher CO2 emissions. Combating the harmful effects of these developments requires smart solutions. One such solution is the planting of raw materials for renewable energy sources. This is why we are contributing to the energy transition in this region with Project Elephant Grass. By investing in Elephant Grass, we are preventing deforestation and developing a renewable fuel that allows Kenyan companies that do not have access to green energy to still operate sustainably.
THE ENERGY TRANSITION IN KENYA
We are used to an incredibly well-functioning energy system. Our electricity grid is reliable, affordable and widely branched. In Kenya, the opposite is true. Electricity from Kenya Power is unavailable, unreliable and expensive in many places. For this reason, many Kenyan businesses rely on other sources of energy, mainly firewood or briquettes made from sawdust from felled trees. Wood has the disadvantage that it grows slowly and trees have more value if you leave them standing. However, wood-fired machines work just as well on briquettes made from Elephant Grass. This solution is not only cheaper than wood, but also more sustainable. This is because Elephant Grass grows very fast and can therefore be harvested up to 6 times a year. With each harvest, 20% of the compensated CO2 remains stored in and around the roots of the grass.
