SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL INVESTMENT

With this project, we distribute beehives in Kenyan farming communities. These farmers receive training and learn everything they need to know to successfully and safely keep bees. The honey, wax and propolis  produced by the bees is sold back to our project partner by these farmers. With the proceeds, they pay for their training and the hives and also get an additional source of income. The bees, in turn, pollinate flowers and crops, thus also creating an ecological return.

BiodiversitY

Bees are essential for biodiversity. One hive ensures pollination of fruit trees, flowers and crops in a radius of about 5 square kilometres around the bee colony.

table banking

The farmers with whom we enter into this project are jointly responsible. We do this by using a "Table Banking Arrangement. This is a microfinance system , where the borrowers are joint guarantors. This social component reduces the likelihood of default.

Each hive provides about 16 kilos of sustainably produced honey per year. Our project partners sell this honey in local markets and to hotels and resorts across Kenya.

1 BEEHIVE iS ONE BOND

In short, you are lending us money (€103.00 per hive) to distribute hives to Kenyan farmers. They do not receive these as a gift but have to pay them back with the sales proceeds of the harvests. You will receive a return for 7 years, and we will repay your loan. Below, we give you some insight into the investment and the returns. Want to dive deeper? Then download our information brochure.

INVESTMENT SPEND PER HIVE

Each hive is represented by a bond with a (nominal) value of €103.00 By purchasing a bond, you lend Corekees money to train farmers and produce, distribute and service hives. We spend the €103.00 per hive on the following:
Image
  • PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND MAINTENANCE OF HIVES - €37.40

5 carpenters will work for two months to make 1000 hives.

  • BEEKEEPER TRAINING & AMBASSADOR SUPPORT FOR PARTICIPATING FARMERS - €9.50

During the project, each group of farmers will receive six training sessions to learn how to keep bees.

  • HARVESTING, PACKAGING AND TRANSPORTATION - €43.60

Costs to ensure that honey can be produced and sold. These include protective suits and machines to extract honey from the combs.

  • EXCHANGE RATE PREMIUM EURO TO KENYAN SHILLING - €5.70

The cost of converting your euros to Kenyan shillings and absorbing any exchange rate differences between the time of your purchase and transfer to Kenya. For this we have included the average of historical volatility in our calculations.

  • MANAGEMENT FEE COREKEES - €6.80

(6.7%) remains as the management fee for Corekees.

ANNUAL REVENUES PER HIVE

You will receive the honey proceeds from your hive as returns. Your returns consist of redemption of your loan and interest on the borrowed amount. The return calculation is based on two main factors: the number of kilos of honey, beeswax and propolis that - considering ecological factors and sustainable production - we can harvest annually and the selling price of these products. Before we pay out your return, several costs are met. After deducting these costs, what remains per bond is an expected average return of 3.2% per year. The breakdown of costs and returns per bond is as follows:
Image
  • BOND REDEMPTION - €9.80

The redemption of the bond amount.

  • INTEREST INVESTOR - €1.00

The average interest paid to you per hive.

  • COSTS AKILI - €0.45

Among other things, maintenance, training and administration.

  • COSTS COREKEES - €0.40

The reward for Corekees upon success of the project.

  • TAX - €0,45

Tax of 15% levied on interest from Kenya.

    livelihood  of KENyAN farmers

Africa is a continent that is developing at lightning speed, and Kenya has one of the fastest-growing economies within that continent. At the same time, many Kenyan farmers still live from harvest to harvest and have little livelihood security. The average income of a Kenyan farmer is only €92 a month, and if a harvest fails, that income could be €0.
With this project, we are giving farmers in the Mount Kenya area the opportunity to create an additional source of income. One hive is expected to generate around €28 annually. This amounts to an average income increase of 2.5%. That may not seem like much, but for these farmers, it can make the difference between sending their children to school or not.

    promoting biodiversity

Bees are essential for maintaining and enhancing biodiversity because they are crucial in pollinating plants. Many plants depend on bees and other pollinators to carry pollen from one flower to another, which is necessary to reproduce and produce seeds. Many plant species could not survive without bees and other pollinators, which could have a chain reaction on the rest of the ecosystem.

Besides their role in pollination, bees are also an essential part of the food chain, as they are also a source of food for other animals. Overall, bees are an integral part of our planet's biodiversity and essential for ecosystems' health worldwide!

    in Summary: Why BeEhives?

    • Bees pollinate flowers, plants and crops and are essential for the existence of life on earth.
    • Each hive provides pollination of plants over an area of at least three square kilometres
    • The honey is harvested twice a year and sold at the local market. This yields about 8 kilos of honey and €28,- per year
    • Bees are an endangered species. The number of species as well as the total number of bees worldwide has been declining for decades
    • Proceeds from honey, wax and propolis provide supplementary income for Kenyan farmers
    • If bees go extinct, it leads to mass mortality of lots of other species
