Bees are essential for maintaining and enhancing biodiversity because they are crucial in pollinating plants. Many plants depend on bees and other pollinators to carry pollen from one flower to another, which is necessary to reproduce and produce seeds. Many plant species could not survive without bees and other pollinators, which could have a chain reaction on the rest of the ecosystem.
Besides their role in pollination, bees are also an essential part of the food chain, as they are also a source of food for other animals. Overall, bees are an integral part of our planet's biodiversity and essential for ecosystems' health worldwide!
in Summary: Why BeEhives?
- Bees pollinate flowers, plants and crops and are essential for the existence of life on earth.
- Each hive provides pollination of plants over an area of at least three square kilometres
- The honey is harvested twice a year and sold at the local market. This yields about 8 kilos of honey and €28,- per year
- Bees are an endangered species. The number of species as well as the total number of bees worldwide has been declining for decades
- Proceeds from honey, wax and propolis provide supplementary income for Kenyan farmers
- If bees go extinct, it leads to mass mortality of lots of other species
